Glerárdalur

So we got this week off to study for finals! Yay! (For the week off-not for the finals) Studying is coming along kinda slow--who wants to study the past 18 weeks of classes when we actually have some time off to mess around? So instead of studying on Tuesday, Jure (Slovenia--a country I never heard of before I got to RES but its really old), Kateriina (Finland), David (Alaska) and myself attempted to reach the alpine hut Lambi in the Glerá (Glass) River Valley (Glerárdalur in Icelandic).
It was about an half hour bike ride uphill past the horse stable area and borehole that supplies the hot water for the town pool (only about 44 degree C, so not hot enough for space heating) and past the town dump followed by 11km hike up the river valley to the hut. We had a great time, crossing snow-filled drainages and flying kites and checking out the peaks around us (about 1100m high--that roughly 3300 ft) and marching through the wet heath. The ground was really wet and boggy. Mom is sending me my hiking boots, and I cant wait to get them as my feet were freezing!

We didnt quite make it to the hut, we were really close according to the map I think, but next time for sure now that we´ve blazed a path! Maybe get ahold of some sleeping bags and spend the night (which is just a figurative term for the daylight after 10PM)! Then we can hike the peaks (once the snow is melted--Ive seen pictures so maybe July?) and check out the small glaciers (jöskulls) that lie up in their cirques!

Click here for pics of the hike!
